Why The Barn at Herons Farm is a gift for a photographer
The Barn at Herons Farm sits on a working farm at Buckhold, just outside Pangbourne on Thames in West Berkshire. The Main Barn was built around 300 years ago and still has its beams and pillars, and it stands in a courtyard between the stables, the stable cottages and the red-brick farmhouse.
You get an old barn, a courtyard strung with festoon lights, a walled garden and more than 400 acres of fields and woods. Every hour of the day has its own backdrop.
The farm sits in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Its listed octagonal cowshed, built in 1884 by Alfred Waterhouse, belongs to a Victorian model farm that once had its own narrow gauge railway.
It is a short drive from our base in Berkshire.
The best photographs happen at The Barn at Herons Farm
The Pavilion on the Lawn. The outdoor ceremony spot, on the lawn in front of the farmhouse, with the farm views behind you. In summer the light is soft and even, and the birdsong does the rest.
The Walled Garden. Tucked in on the north edge of the lawn, partly covered, and made for small ceremonies. The walls give a calm, private feel, and the shade is kind to faces.
The Courtyard. The space in front of the Barn, ringed by cottages. This is where the confetti walk, the drinks and the big cheer happen, and once the festoon lights come on it looks even better.
The Yellow Barn. A three-sided tin barn that used to be a working building. With fairy lights it makes a proper farmyard ceremony, and it is the venue's wet-weather option if the Pavilion is off.
The Valley at sunset. Just beyond the main grounds, open fields under a wide sky. The venue suggests slipping away after the wedding breakfast, and that golden light is where the portraits for the wall get taken.
The Main Barn at night. Three hundred years of beams, fairy lights and a bar in the room. Once the band starts, it comes alive.
How I work
I am there to capture real moments, not to run a long list of poses. I have been praised for being discreet and for staying out of the way of the day.
When you want a few portraits, I give gentle direction and keep it quick. Fully candid, or with some creative direction: you choose.
I usually cover the day from the final touches of getting ready until an hour after the first dance. Before the wedding, I like to walk the grounds with you so we can plan the best spots for your time of year.
I keep my colour natural, and I love a timeless black and white.
Photography, film, or both?
Photography. See my candid wedding photography.
Film. Anastassia and I make story-driven wedding films. You get a short film to share soon after the day, and a longer film to keep for the family.
Hybrid. I shoot both photo and film myself. Hybrid wedding photography and film suits weddings held in one place, and at The Barn at Herons Farm the ceremony, drinks, dinner and dancing all happen around one courtyard.
If you are looking for a Barn at Herons Farm wedding videographer as well as a photographer, booking both with one team means one plan, one timeline and no one in each other's way.
I am also a licensed drone pilot. Drone rules differ from venue to venue, so I always check with Herons Farm before your day.

The Barn at Herons Farm wedding photography: your questions
Where is The Barn at Herons Farm?
Herons Farm is at Buckhold, near Pangbourne on Thames, in West Berkshire. The postcode is RG8 8QA. It is a working farm in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a short drive from Reading.
Can you get married outside at Herons Farm?
Yes. The Pavilion on the Lawn is the outdoor ceremony space, on the lawn in front of the farmhouse, and it is the venue's most popular choice in summer. The Walled Garden is a smaller, partly covered option.
What happens if it rains at Herons Farm?
The Yellow Barn is the venue's wet-weather alternative to an outdoor ceremony, and the Walled Garden is partly covered. The Main Barn and the Courtyard give us dry spots with good light, and the barn floors are heated, so winter weddings work well too.
How many guests can Herons Farm hold?
Herons Hall, in the corner of the courtyard, holds ceremonies of up to 45 guests. For the Main Barn and the other spaces, the venue will confirm numbers for your date.
Can you stay at Herons Farm?
Yes. There are rooms and cottages on the farm for around 40 guests, which means relaxed photos of you both the next morning before anyone heads home.
Do you film weddings at Herons Farm as well?
Yes. Anastassia and I make wedding films, and I also shoot hybrid photo and film myself. The Gallops, the Valley and the Courtyard all work as well on film as they do in stills.
