Why Bury Court Barn is a gift for a photographer

Bury Court Barn is a Grade II listed barn in the village of Bentley, near Farnham, on the Surrey and Hampshire border. Historic England puts it in Hampshire, the venue writes Surrey, and either way it is five miles from Farnham, just north of the A31. The barn goes back to the 1600s and was rebuilt in stone and brick in the early 1800s, on what was then a hop farm.

An old stone barn, a converted hop kiln and 22 acres of gardens by two of the best garden designers in the world. There is a backdrop for every hour of the day.

The courtyard garden is by Piet Oudolf and the front garden by Christopher Bradley-Hole. Grasses, perennials and gravel paths do a lot of the work for a photographer, and they change every month.

It is an easy drive from our base in Berkshire, along the A31.

The best photographs happen at Bury Court Barn

The Barn. The main room, with huge timber posts, curved braces and tie beams overhead, and old plank double doors. It holds 160 for a ceremony and reception, and the light through the doorways is lovely for the vows.

The Courtyard garden. Piet Oudolf's planting fills the old farmyard with grasses and perennials. This is where drinks happen and where I take most of the candid photos of your guests.

The front garden. A grid of rusted steel-edged beds, gravel paths and swathes of tall grass. It has a meadow feel, at its best in late summer and autumn, and it is the spot for a quiet walk with the two of you.

The walled garden. The venue calls it the escape from the world, and that is how I use it. Ten minutes away from the crowd for portraits.

The Hop Kiln. The old kiln is now the café, and its doorway and old brick make a strong frame for the two of you or a small group.

The Barn at night. Once dinner clears and the music starts, the beams and the stone come into their own. This is where the dancing photos happen.

How I work

I am there to capture real moments, not to run a long list of poses. I have been praised for being discreet and for staying out of the way of the day.

When you want a few portraits, I give gentle direction and keep it quick. Fully candid, or with some creative direction: you choose.

I usually cover the day from the final touches of getting ready until an hour after the first dance. Before the wedding, I like to walk the grounds with you so we can plan the best spots for your time of year.

I keep my colour natural, and I love a timeless black and white.

Photography, film, or both?

  • Photography. See my candid wedding photography.

  • Film. Anastassia and I make story-driven wedding films. You get a short film to share soon after the day, and a longer film to keep for the family.

  • Hybrid. I shoot both photo and film myself. Hybrid wedding photography and film suits weddings held in one place, and at Bury Court Barn the ceremony, drinks, dinner and dancing all happen within a few steps of each other, with the bedrooms right next to the Barn.

If you are looking for a Bury Court Barn wedding videographer as well as a photographer, booking both with one team means one plan, one timeline and no one in each other's way.

I am also a licensed drone pilot. Drone rules differ from venue to venue, so I always check with Bury Court Barn before your day.

Bury Court Barn wedding photography: your questions

Is Bury Court Barn in Surrey or Hampshire?

The barn is in Bentley, in the East Hampshire district of Hampshire, and Historic England lists it there. The venue writes Surrey because Farnham, the nearest town, is over the border. The postcode is GU10 5LZ.

How many guests can Bury Court Barn hold?

The venue says 160 guests for a ceremony and reception, 200 for a reception only, and 200 for drinks and canapés.

Can you get married outside at Bury Court Barn?

The venue offers an indoor or outdoor ceremony. The Barn is the indoor option. Ask the venue which outdoor spot is available for your date and whether it is licensed for the legal part.

What happens if it rains at Bury Court Barn?

The Barn doorways and covered cart entrances give us dry spots with good light, and the bedrooms are next to the Barn so nobody gets wet. Grasses and stone look richer on a grey day.

Can you stay at Bury Court Barn?

Yes. There are 14 double rooms and a bridal suite next to the Barn, which is where you can get ready with your full entourage. It also means relaxed photos of you both the next morning.

Can you have confetti or a drone at Bury Court Barn?

The venue's website does not state its confetti, sparkler, fireworks or drone rules, so ask them when you book. I am a licensed drone pilot and I check with the venue before every wedding.
