Why Farnham Castle is a gift for a photographer
Farnham Castle is a Grade I listed medieval castle at the top of Castle Hill in Farnham, Surrey, right on the Hampshire border. It was built in 1138 for the Bishops of Winchester, and it was their home for more than 800 years. Kings and queens stayed here, from King John to Elizabeth I.
You get a real castle, a brick gatehouse, a great hall and five acres of lawns, all in one place. Every hour of the day has its own backdrop.
The Keep is over 900 years old and sits above the rest of the site. The Great Hall and the Norman Chapel go back to around 1180. Below them, the Great Lawn looks out over Farnham and the Surrey Hills.
It is an easy drive from our base in Berkshire, just off the A31.
The best photographs happen at Farnham Castle
The gatehouse arch. The red brick entrance tower is the first thing your guests see. The arch and the steps under it make a strong frame for the wedding party, in daylight and again at night when the lantern is lit.
The Lantern Hall. A light, high room with tall windows, and one of the four licensed ceremony rooms. The soft daylight is kind to everyone, and the flowers by the windows always look good.
The courtyard. Gravel, brick walls and the Castle steps. This is where the confetti walk and the big cheer happen straight after the ceremony.
The Great Lawn. Wide open, with the Castle behind you and the view over Farnham in front. Room for the group photos and for the whole wedding party to let off steam.
The Keep at golden hour. Old flint walls, stone steps and long evening light. This is where I take the portraits that end up framed on the wall.
The Great Hall at night. Eight hundred years of history, a chequered dance floor and fairy lights. Once the band starts, it comes alive.
How I work
I am there to capture real moments, not to run a long list of poses. I have been praised for being discreet and for staying out of the way of the day.
When you want a few portraits, I give gentle direction and keep it quick. Fully candid, or with some creative direction: you choose.
I usually cover the day from the final touches of getting ready until an hour after the first dance. Before the wedding, I like to walk the grounds with you so we can plan the best spots for your time of year.
I keep my colour natural, and I love a timeless black and white.

Farnham Castle is in Surrey, at the top of Castle Hill in Farnham. The Hampshire border is a few minutes away, which is why you see both counties mentioned. The postcode is GU9 0AG.
How many guests can Farnham Castle hold?
The Great Hall seats 230 for dinner and up to 350 for evening dancing. For the ceremony, the Great Hall seats up to 265, the Lantern Hall 160, the Winchester Suite 130 and the Library 60.
Can you get married outside at Farnham Castle?
Yes, with a celebrant, on the East Lawn or the Great Lawn. The legal ceremony happens in one of the four licensed rooms, so most couples do the legal part indoors and the vows outside, or the other way round. Check with the venue for your date.
Can you have a church wedding at Farnham Castle?
There are two chapels inside the Castle, the Norman Chapel and the Bishop's Chapel. Both are available for Church of England weddings to couples holding their reception at the Castle.
What happens if it rains at Farnham Castle?
The Lantern Hall, the Great Stair and the gatehouse arch all give us covered spots with good light. On a grey day the brick and flint look richer, not duller, and the Great Hall is lovely for a wet-weather drinks reception.
Can you stay at Farnham Castle?
Yes. There are 33 en-suite bedrooms across the estate, and a suite for the couple with a roll-top bath. Breakfast is served in the Library the next morning, which makes for relaxed photos of you both before you leave.
