Why Silchester Farm is a gift for a photographer

Silchester Farm is an exclusive-use barn venue in the village of Silchester, Hampshire, right on the Berkshire border. It sits down a tree-lined lane, five miles north of Basingstoke and nine miles from Reading, beside the walls of Calleva Atrebatum, one of the best preserved Roman towns in Britain.

You get a 400-year-old threshing barn, a lake with a weeping willow, formal gardens and open fields, and the whole estate is yours for the day.

The Hampshire Threshing Barn is the ceremony room and the Cow Shed is where you dine and dance. Between them are courtyards, the Old Hen House, the Kitchen Garden and the fields, and up to 47 guests can sleep on site.

It is an easy drive from our base in Berkshire, between the M3 and the M4.

The best photographs happen at Silchester Farm

The Woodshed. The prep room, open from 9:30am. Getting ready is where the story starts, and I photograph it quietly, from the dress on the hanger to the last look in the mirror.

The lakeside pergola. The outdoor ceremony space sits by the water with the weeping willow behind you. On a fine morning this is where the vows happen.

The Hampshire Threshing Barn. Four hundred years old, with beams overhead and lights strung through the roof. On a wet day the ceremony comes in here, and the soft light through the doors is kind to everyone.

The Old Hen House and courtyard. Drinks and canapes flow between the two, and this is where most of my candid work happens: hugs, raised glasses, the petal confetti in the garden.

The Formal Gardens. A few quiet minutes here for the two of you, away from the crowd, and you get the portraits that end up framed on the wall.

The Fields at sunset. Acres of open landscape and long evening light. We slip out for ten minutes while the Cow Shed is turned around, and come back with the photographs that sum up the day.

How I work

I am there to capture real moments, not to run a long list of poses. I have been praised for being discreet and for staying out of the way of the day.

When you want a few portraits, I give gentle direction and keep it quick. Fully candid, or with some creative direction: you choose.

I usually cover the day from the final touches of getting ready until an hour after the first dance. Before the wedding, I like to walk the grounds with you so we can plan the best spots for your time of year.

I keep my colour natural, and I love a timeless black and white.

Photography, film, or both?

  • Photography. See my candid wedding photography.

  • Film. Anastassia and I make story-driven wedding films. You get a short film to share soon after the day, and a longer film to keep for the family.

  • Hybrid. I shoot both photo and film myself. Hybrid wedding photography and film suits weddings held in one place, and at Silchester Farm the ceremony, drinks, dinner, dancing and even the beds for the night are all on one estate.

If you are looking for a Silchester Farm wedding videographer as well as a photographer, booking both with one team means one plan, one timeline and no one in each other's way.

I am also a licensed drone pilot. Drone rules differ from venue to venue, and Silchester Farm has animals on site, so I always check with the venue before your day.

Silchester Farm wedding photography: your questions

Is Silchester Farm in Hampshire or Berkshire?

Silchester Farm is in Hampshire, in the village of Silchester, about five miles north of Basingstoke. The Berkshire border is minutes away and the postcode starts RG, which is why both counties come up. Put "Silchester Farm" in the sat nav rather than the postcode.

How many guests can Silchester Farm hold?

Up to 140 guests, including children, for the ceremony, the wedding breakfast and the evening party. The Cow Shed takes the dinner and dancing.

Can you get married outside at Silchester Farm?

Yes. The outdoor ceremony pergola sits beside the lake with views of the weeping willow. Registrars are booked through Hampshire County Council, or you can have a celebrant or a blessing. Check with the venue which spaces are licensed for the legal part.

Can you throw confetti at Silchester Farm?

Yes, natural dried flower petals, thrown in the garden. Sparklers and fireworks are not allowed because of the animals on the farm, but smoke bombs are permitted outside in set areas.

What happens if it rains at Silchester Farm?

You do not have to decide between the lakeside and the barn until 9:30am on the day. If it rains, the ceremony moves into the Hampshire Threshing Barn, drinks go under cover in the Old Hen House, and the barn doors give me dry spots with good light.

Can you stay at Silchester Farm?

Yes. Up to 47 guests can stay on the estate, across the Grade II listed Farmhouse, the Barn House, the Granary and nine Pyggies. Breakfast is included for wedding guests, and check-out is 10am.
