Why Wasing Estate is a gift for a photographer

Wasing Estate sits in the Berkshire countryside near Aldermaston, between Newbury and Reading, right on the Hampshire border. The estate has been in the same family for seven generations, since John Mount bought it in 1759 as a retreat from his map business in London.

You get a red brick barn, a glass walled garden room, a painted summerhouse and a fifteenth century church, all a short walk from each other. Every hour of the day has its own backdrop.

Wasing Park is the wedding venue on the estate, a restored farm hamlet built around the Grade II listed Castle Barn. Around it are the Granary on its staddle stones, the Dovecote, a terrace under a stretch tent and the Parish Church of St Nicholas.

It is a short drive from our base in Berkshire.

The best photographs happen at Wasing Estate

The Garden Room. The civil ceremony room, with old brick, rustic beams and walls of glass bi-fold doors that let the outdoors in. The light is soft and even, which is kind to everyone, and I can shoot from the garden without stepping into the room.

The Victorian Summerhouse. The outdoor ceremony spot, with a hand painted mural inside. Vows in the open air, trees behind you, and guests on the grass giving me real reactions.

The church and Church Lawn. St Nicholas is on the estate, so a church wedding needs no cars. The path out of the door is where the petal confetti flies, and the lawn beside it is a calm place for family groups.

The Italian Gardens and the fountain. Drinks are served in the gardens outside the Castle Barn. The fountain and the barn's brick tower frame the two of you while your guests get on with the canapes.

The Castle Barn terrace at dusk. The stretch tent, the fire pit and the wood-fired oven come to life as the light drops. This is where I take the portraits that end up on the wall.

The Castle Barn at night. Red brick, arrow slits, a proper stage and good acoustics. Once the band starts, it becomes the best room on the estate.

How I work

I am there to capture real moments, not to run a long list of poses. I have been praised for being discreet and for staying out of the way of the day.

When you want a few portraits, I give gentle direction and keep it quick. Fully candid, or with some creative direction: you choose.

I usually cover the day from the final touches of getting ready until an hour after the first dance. Before the wedding, I like to walk the grounds with you so we can plan the best spots for your time of year.

I keep my colour natural, and I love a timeless black and white.

Photography, film, or both?

  • Photography. See my candid wedding photography.

  • Film. Anastassia and I make story-driven wedding films. You get a short film to share soon after the day, and a longer film to keep for the family.

  • Hybrid. I shoot both photo and film myself. Hybrid wedding photography and film suits weddings held in one place, and at Wasing Estate the ceremony, drinks, dinner, dancing and the beds for the night are all inside one hamlet.

If you are looking for a Wasing Estate wedding videographer as well as a photographer, booking both with one team means one plan, one timeline and no one in each other's way.

I am also a licensed drone pilot. Drone rules differ from venue to venue, so I always check with Wasing Estate before your day.
